Don't Understand?

Act On What You Believe

I bet that sounds strange to you. A lot of times we hear, "Stand up for what you believe!" But, how many times are we willing to do more than just stand.

I have just finished a paper for my English class on the topic: Do you think Arthur Miller was "blind to the world" when he wrote the book The Crucible ? If you don't know what either of these things are, I'll tell you. Arthur Miller was a very prominent playwright during the McCarthy era. The McCarthy era was when Senator McCarthy started tracking down and trying people in the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) for being associated with the communist party. Arthur Miller was tried for being a communist and once you admit to being one (which he did), you have to name names. But Mr. Miller did not name names. He didn't believe that McCarthyism was right and so he took a stand against it.

But then he also took action. He wrote The Crucible in a way to protest the trials going on in D.C. at the time. The Crucible is set in Salem, Massachusetts at the time of the witch trials. The parallels that exist in the story to the real world are undeniable...but not to all. Miller was criticized for his work but still stood with his opinion as shown in an excerpt from his memoir, Time Bends, in my textbook.

What did I say that all for? Well, Arthur Miller's book caused such an uproar that more and more people began to question McCarthy. Finally, in 1954 he was centured (meaning he couldn't do anything anymore) by the Senate. That shut down the movement that had been ruining people's lives and reputations- all because he took action.

So, what does this have to do with confidence? You have to be confident in what you believe in to take action. If you aren't and you try to take action, people will know- trust me they will. And if you aren't confident in what you believe, why should they? Confidence is, also, knowing what's worth it. Getting an argument over different beliefs is foolish. Neither of you are going to change your mind...so stop it. Knowing what you stand for and what you feel comfortable acting on is a very important part of knowing yourself. Until next time, stay CONFIDENT.
